IRON ORE DEPOSIT DISCOVERED
(28/08/2008)
Maputo, 28 Aug (AIM) - An Indian consortium is currently involved in research and exploration to assess the potential of an iron ore deposit uncovered in Lalaua district, in the northern Mozambican province of Nampula, reports Thursday's issue of the Maputo daily "Noticias|. The Damodar-Ferro consortium claims it has indications from preliminary studies that the Lalaua deposit can be profitably exploited for several decades. Last Saturday, the consortium began work to open an access road to link the Meti administrative post, where the deposit is located, to Iapala, in the neighbouring district of Ribaue, which is on the railway to the port of Nacala. The idea is to facilitate the transport of iron ore from Iapala to the port, and from there to international markets. Lalaua district administrator Araujo Momade told reporters that this 75 kilometre road will cross the Lalaua river, which implies building a bridge there strong enough to bear the weight of the trucks that will transport the iron ore to Iapala station. He added that information about the existence of an iron ore deposit in Meti started circulating in 2002 when another consortium, involving European and South African companies, conducted exploratory studies and the results were positive. Exploitation of the mineral did not go ahead then because of a deadlock in negotiations between the companies and the government about the opening of an alternative road to the area of Nioce, in Malema district, which is also on the Nacala railway. This alternative road would have involved a heavy investment, and the companies wanted the Mozambican government to part finance its construction. Momade said that contacts between the local government and the new consortium ended in an agreement whereby the consortium will also build classrooms and a health unit in the village of Namacalo, to benefit the local residents. He added that the Indian consortium has also pledged to carry out other social undertakings, which will require joint approval between the consortium and the local government. Momade stressed that the Miti-Iapala road will also serve the interests of other operators in the area, including the companies that purchase tobacco and cotton from peasant farmers. (AIM)
