GOVERNMENT SATISFIED WITH GAS PRODUCTION
(17/09/2008)
Maputo, 17 Sep (AIM) - The Mozambican government has expressed its satisfaction with the levels of exploitation of natural gas at Temane, in the southern province of Inhambane. This mega-project has been operated by the South African petrochemical giant SASOL since 2004. The gas is treated at Temane, and then pumped by pipeline to South Africa and to the southern Mozambican city of Matola. "We have been benefiting both through the export of natural gas and through domestic consumption", said Deputy Planning and Development Minister Victor Bernardo, at a briefing for reporters after a cabinet meeting on Tuesday. The gas operations are now making a substantial contribution to the Mozambican treasury. Bernardo said that in personal income tax alone Sasol paid the state the equivalent of 8.3 million US dollars between July 2007 and June this year. This compares positively with the 1.8 million US dollars paid in 2004, when the project started operating. Bernardo said that total revenue earned by the gas projects had risen from 50.4 million US dollars in 2004, to 127 million in 2007. Total payments to the state were nine million dollars in 2004, but 40 million in 2007. A balance sheet of the government's Economic and Social Plan for the first half of this year shows that sales of gas have grown significantly thanks to the increase in the quantity extracted, from about 22,596.200 gigajoules during the first half of 2007, to 25,609.800 gigajoules in the first half of this year. The increase in revenue has also resulted from a 22 per cent hike in the price of natural gas in international markets. In the first quarter of 2008 , the gas price reached 220.1 US dollars per cubic metre. Most of the Temane gas is exported to SASOL's plants in the South African town of Secunda. But some is used domestically by companies in the city of Matola and the district of Boane, including the MOZAL aluminium smelter, and the Matola cement factory. MOZAL alone is now using three million gigajoules of the gas a year. This gas is also used to generate electric power to supply the districts of Vilankulo and Inhassoro, the town of Nova Mambone, and the Bazaruto islands, all in the northern part of Inhambane province, and Chokwe, in the neighbouring province of Gaza.
